Hannes Lohi: Genetic diversity and gene tests as tools

Curlycoated Retriever is a rare breed worldwide. Enough genetic diversity is needed for heathly, happy dogs. Modern gene tests are useful tool for breeders in several deceases such as GSDIIIa, EIC and PRAcord1, but we need to know how to use the information of tests.

Professor Hannes Lohi is the leader of canine genetic research group at the University of Helsinki and at Folkhälsan Research Center. Their aim is to identify the genetic abnormalities leading to hereditary diseases in dogs. They have launched several projects and are studying for example different neurological, ophthalmic, autoimmune and behavioral diseases and disorders in dozens of different breeds.

Riitta Liimatainen: Finnish way to measure the behavior of dogs

In Finland there are several ways to measure behavior, character and temperament of the dogs. M. Sc. Riitta Liimatainen tells how to use MH mental description, character tests and also gundog tests for selection of breeding animals and as help in daily life. She also tells what kind of dogs Curlies are according the test results.

Riitta Liimatainen evaluates MH mental descriptions and has seen several Finnish Curlies in the MH mental descriptions arranged by Curly Coated Retriever Club of Finland. Riitta Liimatainen works as a Director of Finnish Guide Dog School.
